Bookshelf invitation – Magpie Tales

Magpie tales blog asked people to write a poem, or vignette based on this picture:

To make it tougher, I gave myself thirty minutes. Here’s my response.

Every book is unfinished.
The secret’s out.
There’s something lacking within,
And they squat on the shelves going nowhere.

Abandoned on the edge of the road.
Mere objects in time.
Promising nothing, gathering dust
And they squat on the shelves going nowhere.

Until someone clambers inside.
Rides shotgun for a while.
Turns over pages, opens them up
Then they jump off the shelves going somewhere.

  1. It takes me about 30 mins to think up a title – so bravo on the poem! Nice to know they took off for a while. That’ll sort the pesky dust out!
